Albert Edward Sterner -
Oil on canvas, believed to be a rare painting of his wife Marie Sterner.
Late 19th / early 20th Century.
Size of painting approx. 20 x 24 inches; frame approx. 26 1/2
x 30 1/2 inches.
The back of the canvas is signed.
We believe this painting depicts Albert Sterner's first wife, Marie (1880-1953).
It appears that the hair color is right (see for example
"Marie Peeling Oranges", 1895). Also compare with "Mrs. Marie
Sterner" (1899) in the Smithsonian American Art Museum collection;
the facial features are not inconsistent with those depicted in the
portrait here.
Notice also the way she's dressed in this painting.
We estimate this portrait to have been painted somewhere between the
late 1890's and 1910.
Albert Edward Sterner (1863-1946) was born to American parents in London.
He studied at the Julian Academy in Paris, France. He emigrated
to the USA in 1881, moving first to Chicago and then to New York.
Sterner
was a noted painter, printmaker, and illustrator; it seems his printmaking
speciality was drypoint, although he also produced some lithographs.
Sterner did illustrations for Harper's and LIFE magazines,
as well as several other publications. He was president of the Society
of Illustrators (1907-1908) and later taught at the Arts Students League
in New York (1918). Sterner received many accolades and awards during
his career.
