Pocket Knife, Springless folder ("Penny
Knife"), 18th to early 19th Century. Judging from the markings,
the knife (or at least the blade) may be from the Scarperia region of
Italy. This type of knife was often carried in North America during
the Colonial and Revolutionary War eras. Blade has deep rust patina
typical of age and may have been wire-brushed or wheeled at some point.
It does not, however, appear to have been sharpened any time recently.
Knife appears to be original, genuine and of the period (1700's
to early 1800's).
Size: blade is about 3 inches long and about 1" across
widest part.
Closed length is about 3 3/4 inches.
#023.
Price: $79.00

Shell Casing, 40mm Artillery, WWII - Empty
/ Fired / completely Inert. Outer headstamp is dated 1941.
Inner headstamp says No.18 and II, also 5/42. Overall height
about 311 mm. I don't know the exact weapon this was made for,
but it may have been the 40 mm Bofors L/60 antiaircraft gun.
Casing is in good shape structurally. Should clean up
nicely with some brass polish.

Westphal Balance
- an older type of specific gravity balance. Old / antique, made by
Fisher Scientific. This one is a special piece of NJ industrial memorabilia
(Keep reading to see why).
It appears all the major parts are present, though I have no way to test
this item. The Westphal balance is from an era gone by; they
are not used in any modern lab, as far as I am aware. This item is
being sold as a collectible only and is not guaranteed to work. At
one time, when I was trying to figure out how to use the thing, I weighed
one of the U-shaped hook weights on an analytical balance. It weighed
in at 0.5037 grams, but I don't know enough about a Westphal balance to
know what the significance of that is. This item is being sold as-is;
please study the photos carefully.
The words "FISHER, Pgh., Pa." appear on the balance arm.
The carrying case contains a metal plaque or tag that says Bound
Brook Plant, American Cyanamid Co. This would place it from the
now-demolished Bound Brook, NJ American Cyanamid plant, a place either
famous or notorious, depending on whom you ask. There was a story
in that part of Jersey about how one of their reactor towers lifted off
the ground like a rocket one day from a runaway reaction, but I'm not sure
how true that is. Friend of a friend, and all. I do know the
Bound Brook plant acquired some measure of infamy for its hazardous waste.
I believe it was a Superfund site for a while.
The Cyanamid plaque gives this piece quite an interesting bit of "provenance".
I bought the piece from an antique dealer at least ten years ago.
This item would make a nice display piece in a collection of early scientific
apparati. These balances seem to be quite unusual on the market today,
but this particular one is all the more special because it's a piece of
New Jersey's industrial history.
