Dough Table
with storage - Irish pine, c. 1820 - 1840. Authentic Irish
country furniture of this period is uncommon, especially since so many homes
were burned down in the Irish countryside during the Potato Famine (1845-1852).
Even among the many dark chapters of the British Empire's
history, the Irish famine stands out as shocking. For insight, see
the 1995 TV documentary "The Irish in America".
The dough table:
The lid, made of three planks, acts as both a tabletop / work surface and
the cover for the storage space underneath. The workmanship is consistent
with country furniture of the period; the legs and stretcher are
joined with mortise-and-tenon construction. This is a wonderful,
functional piece of antique furniture for your country kitchen.
Although it has a rustic appearance, the construction is solid; in
the early Nineteenth Century, furniture makers of the British Isles took care with their
scarce materials.
